class=\"text-area\"><h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">Muhlenberg County Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program<\/h1><p>If you are pregnant, recently had a baby, are breastfeeding, or have a child younger than five years of age, the special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) could help you. WIC is a short-term intervention program designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behavior in high-risk populations. This program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.<\/p><h3><strong>WIC provides: <\/strong><\/h3><div class=\"text-area\">\u2022 Nutrition education and services<\/div><div class=\"text-area\">\u2022 Breastfeeding promotion and education<\/div><div class=\"text-area\">\u2022 A monthly food prescription of nutritious foods WIC saves lives and improves the health of nutritionally at-risk women, infants, and\u00a0 \u00a0 children.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"text-area\">The results of studies conducted by FNS and other non-government entities prove that WIC is one of the nation\u2019s most successful and cost-effective nutrition intervention programs. Since its beginning in 1974, the WIC Program has earned the reputation of being one of the most successful Federally-funded nutrition programs in the United States. Studies show:<\/p><p>\u2022 WIC breastfeeding policy and program activities were strengthened in the early 1990&#8217;s<br \/>\u2022 Between 1996 and 2001, the percentage of WIC mothers breastfeeding in the hospital increased by almost 25 percent, from 46.6 to\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 58.2 percent<br \/>\u2022 The percentage of WIC infants breastfeeding at six months of age increased by 61.2 percent, from 12.9 to 20.8 percent<br \/>\u2022 For those infants who are fed infant formula, 90 percent received iron-fortified formula, which is recommended for nearly all non-\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0breastfed infants for the first year of life.<\/p><h3><strong>Immunization Rates and Regular Source of Medical Care<\/strong><\/h3><p>A regular schedule of immunizations is recommended for children from birth to two years of age, which coincides with the period in which many low-income children participate in WIC. Studies have found significantly improved rates of childhood immunization and of having a regular source of medical care associated with WIC participation.<\/p><h3><strong>Improved Cognitive Development<\/strong><\/h3><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1550\" src=\"http:\/\/www.muhlenbergcountyhealthdepartment.com\/2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/kid-and-numbers_pic_3_grande-300x225.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.muhlenbergcountyhealthdepartment.com\/2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/kid-and-numbers_pic_3_grande-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.muhlenbergcountyhealthdepartment.com\/2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/kid-and-numbers_pic_3_grande-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.muhlenbergcountyhealthdepartment.com\/2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/kid-and-numbers_pic_3_grande.webp 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p><p>Cognitive development influences school achievement and behavior. Participation in the WIC Program has been shown to:<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); background-color: initial;\">\u2022 improve vocabulary scores for children of mothers who participated in WIC during\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 pregnancy\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); background-color: initial;\">\u2022 significantly improve memory for numbers for children enrolled in WIC after the first\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0year of life<\/span><\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><strong>Improved Preconception Nutritional Status<\/strong><\/h3><p>Preconception nutritional status is an important determinant of birth outcome. A previous pregnancy can cause nutritional depletion of the postpartum woman, particularly those with high parity and short interpregnancy intervals. One study found: \u2022 women enrolled in WIC both during pregnancy and postpartum periods delivered infants with higher mean birth weights in\u00a0a subsequent pregnancy than women who received WIC prenatally only \u2022 the women who received postpartum benefits had higher hemoglobin levels and lower risk of maternal obesity at the onset\u00a0of the subsequent pregnancy<\/p><h3><strong>Applying for WIC<\/strong><\/h3><p>You can set up an appointment to apply for WIC by contacting the clinic at 270-754-3200.
